After the European Kyokushin title from Portugal, Georgi Doychev took a well-deserved bronze medal too in the category up to 80 kg. on The Kyokushin World Championship (KWU) for men and women. To get to the semi-final, the National from the Bulgarian Karate Kyokushin Federation achieved three consecutive victories in Kazakhstan, over contestants from Spain, Ukraine, and Litva. There he had to face the world champion from Russia Alexander Drozd, where Georgi lost the meeting.
Congratulations, you took the bronze medal! Are you happy?
There is no reason for me not to be happy because the championship was very hard and there were very strong contestants. Over 300 people from 50 countries. There is always something that you are not pleased with because you are aiming to show your best and get to the highest ranking. I can say that I’m pleased at this point.
It can be said that you had a heavy draw too?
That can be the case because I also had a preliminary meeting too. There were 4 meetings I had to face to get to this third place. The first one was against a person from Spain. Afterward, I had to face the Ukrainian person, who was resting and had fresher strength than me. The next one was the person from Litva and on the semi-final, I met the one form Russia, who became world champion for second time in a row.
Semi-final against a strength from Russia. How did the battle go from your perspective? What wasn’t enough for you to win against this opponent?
I think I have the qualities for the victory. For this meeting, I was already very tired. The meeting itself contributed to his supremacy.
What was the feeling when you got on the ladder and you saw the Bulgarian flag going up?
You can’t describe it with words. It needs to be experienced!
A couple of words for the championship in Kazakhstan? Did you like it?
Yes, the organization was on a World level, for real. Like it’s every time on a KWU championship.
What expects you now? Will you give yourself a little bit of break?
Yes, now I will have a little bit of a break. I still don’t know the agenda for 2020.
In a nutshell, how did your year went?
It was successful for me. I became European champion one month ago and now a third place on the World Championship. I think it went well!
