Bulgaria with another title from the Kyokushin World Championship

Bulgaria won a bronze medal at the World Kyokushin Karate Championship for men and women, organized by the World Kyokushin Union (KWU) at the end of last year. It goes to the national Iya Kostova in the up to 55 kg category after a change in the ranking.

The championship was held in Nur-Sultan (Kazakhstan), with Kostova finishing fourth in the up to 55kg category. Today, however, KWU published the new ranking. The revision is due to the results of the tests made then for the use of prohibited stimulants. Among them, it turned out that some were positive for doping.

The revision is coming after testing the competitors for the use of prohibited stimulants. Among them, KWU found couple of athletes with positive doping tests.

“Today, the world celebrates Fair Play Day, which is dedicated to clean sport and the fight against doping. And because only clean sport has value, the World Kyokushin Union applies international standards in doping control to its events and ensures that all athletes are placed on an equal footing. To support the global campaign, today we announce the decision of the KWU Anti-Doping Commission to revise the results of the 4th World Cup for anti-doping violations by several athletes,” KWU said an official statement.

One of these positive tests belongs to the representative of the Kazakhstan’s team – Joanna Belik, who finished third in the up to 55 kg category. Her bronze medal was taken away, and in addition she has her competition rights suspended for 6 months.

As a result, Iya Kostova was recognized as the bronze medalist at the World Championship, and she will be awarded with the medal, cup, diploma as well as a financial prize for ranking 3rd in the championship.

Kostova’s award leads to a change in the team ranking as well. Now, the national team of the Bulgarian Karate Kyokushin Federation has 3 awards- a silver medal in the up to 85 kg category, won by Kristiyan Doychev, a bronze medal in the up to 80 kg category, won by Georgi Doychev, and the bronze medal, won by Iya Kostova.
